Adrigole, Ireland
A scattered village strung along the head of a lovley inlet on the very scenic south coast of the Beara Peninsula. Looming over it is Hungry Hill (687m) with two rock-girt lakes which feed a fine cascade after rain. Hungry Hill is the highest of the Caha range which forms the spine of the peninsula, and gave its name to Daphne de Maurier's novel about the local copper-mining barons of the 19th century

Saint John's Abbey
Father Emmanuel Louis Kelsch
1910 - 1997

The youngest child of Henry and Elizabeth (Sullivan) Kelsch, Louis grew up with four brothers and two sisters in the Benedictine parish of Saint Bernard in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and attended Saint Vincent de Paul's Grade School. During his third grade year there he reached what he came to consider "the first turning point of my life" - the selling of newspapers on the street comer of Rice and University, a job he enjoyed for ten years until his graduation from Cretin High School.

[photo of Fr. Emmanuel] This daily task must have allowed the printer's ink of the papers to seep deep into his system and helps to explain his lifelong interest and involvement in journalism. He was also active as a Mass server, a choir member and the centerfielder on the Saint Vincent's baseball team which won the Twin Cities Parochial Grade School League championship in 1925. He later lettered in this same sport at Cretin and played on the 1929 Parochial High School Conference championship team.

With the desire to become a Benedictine monk and priest, young Louis chose not to learn his father's advertising business and opted to begin priesthood studies at Saint John's where he entered the abbey's novitiate in 1931. He received the name of Emmanuel and was henceforth ever delighted to share his name's day of December 25 with the one who was preeminently called Emmanuel, which means "God is with us" (Matthew 1:23).

During the four years prior to and for a year after his ordination to the priesthood in 1938 Father Emmanuel taught English classes at Saint John's Preparatory School. He then began his many years of pastoral service at a variety of assignments in the Bronx, New York, and in the Minnesota communities of Minneapolis, Cold Spring, Stillwater, Saint Paul, Medina, Freeport, Duluth, New Hope, Detroit Lakes and Graceville. At several of parishes he was instrumental in organizing and directing religious education programs for high school students and adults.

For a dozen years, from 1948 to 1960, Father Emmanuel worked in the Bahamas, teaching the students of Saint Augustine's College, Nassau, serving as librarian and moderating the school paper. He also served as associate pasor and pastor of several Nassau parishes and the six mission churches on the Family Island of North Andros.

Wherever Father Emmanuel went his typewriter was sure to go, and from it flowed an avalanche of articles that over the years appeared in such publications as The Wanderer, Our Sunday Visitor, The Remnant, The National Educator, and The Northern Star of Clinton and Graceville, Minnesota. Appreciating the fact that the pen is mightier than the sword, he became adept at collecting quotations to support his stand on numerous issues.

Over the years a number of mild to severe heart attacks kept our confrere conscious of his terminal condition. But quick recuperation found him ready and willing to accept yet another pastoral assignment. He finally retired to the abbey's Saint Raphael's Health Center in 1984 and celebrated the diamond jubilee of his monastic profession in 1992. Not one to take his retirement sitting down, Father Emmanuel combined his daily walks with an energetic effort to keep the Collegeville campus clean by picking up litter ranging from the ubiquitous soft drink cans to the clutter of cigarette butts. No trash was too small for him to stoop, pick up and deposit in a nearby receptacle. His health began to deteriorate several weeks before his quiet and peaceful death from congestive heart failure.

During the Divine Office for Thursday, Week Four, which the monastic community and guests were praying on the evening after Father Emmanuel's mid-day death, one of the psalms that was prayed was Psalm 46. To highlight this prayer's refrain, "The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold," the brief introductory heading of this psalm in the Saint John's Abbey Psalter reads, "God with us. His name shall be called Emmanuel (Mt. 1:23)." No more obvious sign and fitting tribute could have been chosen to salute and remember this confrere of ours who had used his talents and his time to make the name and the presence of Emmanuel a reality. In his own unique way Father Emmanuel was for us: God with us.

In addition to his monastic family, Father Emmanuel is survived by his older brother Gene of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Father Emmanuel at Saint John's Abbey on October 18 with burial in the abbey cemetery. Homily by Abbot Timothy.

Born: December 16, 1910
Professed: July 11, 1932
Ordained: June 6, 1938
Died: October 16, 1997

We commend our brother Emmanuel to your prayers.
