COUPLE SLAIN; MURDER AND SUICIDE SEEN

Whitefish Bay Man Beat His Wife to Death, Then Ended Own Life
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------
A Whitefish Bay man killed his wife with a hammer and then committed
suicide in the basement of their home at 4850 N. Woodruff av. Friday.
Dr. L.J. Van Hecke, county medical examiner, said the deaths were murder
and suicide.

The dead were Ralph Gibson, 70, and his wife, Mary A., 65.

Police said that Mrs. Gibson was hit eight times on the head with a
hammer. Gibson's throat was slashed with a hunting knife.

The deaths occurred about noon Friday, but the bodies were not found
until 5:30 pm by a granddaughter, Miss Mary Jane Gibson, 19, who lived
with the couple.

Saw Grandmother's Body
----------------------------------
Miss Gibson, a student at Mount Mary college, saw her grandmother's body
at the foot of the basement steps as she entered the house by a side
door. She ran to a neighbor's home and called police.

Officers found Gibson dead on a couch in a basment workroom. The
hunting knife was on the floor beside the couch. On a workbench was a
claw hammer.

Whitefish Bay police and Paul Danko and Raymond Gutowski, assistant
county medical examiners, reconstructed the tragedy this way:

Mrs. Gibson was washing clothes in the basement when she was attacked
from behind. There were seven blows on the back of her head and an
eighth blow, causing a severe skull fracture, at the right temple.
She apparently tried to ward off the blows because a finger on her right
hand was fractured. She also apparently moved about 15 feet to the foot
of the steps before collapsing.

Tested the Knife
----------------------
Gibson put the hammer on the work bench and picked up the hunting knife.
Judging from the superficial cuts on the left side of his throat, he
tested the knife, then plunged it into his neck, severing the jugular
vein. He staggered to the couch and died.

Miss Laura Boyle, of 3836 N. Murray av., a sister of the dead woman,
told investigators that Gibson was subject to moods of depression. She
said she telephoned the house at 10 am Friday to find out how Gibson
was. She said Mrs. Gibson told her that her husband was "feeling better".

Mrs. Fred A. Miller, of 5145 N. Palisades rd., Whitefish Bay, a sister
of Gibson, said she went to the home about 3 pm Friday. She rang the
doorbell, then entered the house when there was no response. She left
after a search of the first floor, believing no one was home. Mrs.
Miller is a widow of a former president of the Miller Brewing Co., who
died in 1943.

Police were told by Miss Gibson that she left for school at 7:45 am. At
that time, she said, Gibson was in bed although the grandmother was up.

Miss Gibson had lived with her grandparents since the death of her
mother when she was 4 years old. Her father died a year later.

Gibson was a retired draftsman and formerly was employed by several
engineering firms in Milwaukee. He retired 15 years ago. The couple
had lived in their brick colonial home 17 years.

Whitefish Bay police said that naighbors told them the Gibsons were an
"ideal couple." The Gibsons had been married more than 40 years.

Ralph Schiefelbein, 4844 N. Woodruff av., said that the Gibsons were
"wonderful neighbors." He said that Gibson, however, had been so
depressed that although he was a Braves fan he did not turn on the radio
to listen to the ball games the last few months.

Police said neighbors told them the Gibsons were planning a trip to Van
Nuys, Calif., to see a daughter, Mrs. J. William Fowles, after Gibson's
health improved.

Surviving Gibson, besides his daughter and sister, is a brother,
William, Watersmeet, Mich.

Mrs. Gibson is survived, besides the daughter, by four sisters, Mrs.
Neil Gleason, Mrs. Clarence C. Haskins, and the Misses Laura and Harriet
Boyle, all of Milwauke, and two brothers, Robert I. Boyle, Milwaukee,
and Lawrence, Skokie, Ill.

The Gibsons were members of Holy Family Catholic Church, and were
charter members of St. Monica's church, both of Whitefish Bay.

Joint funeral services will be at 8:15 am Tuesday at the Feerick funeral
home, 2025, E. Capitol dr., and at 9 am at Holy Family church, N.
Wildwood av. and E. Chateau pl. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.

The bodies will be at the funeral home after 4 pm Monday. The Holy
Family sodality and Holy Name society will recite the rosary at 8 pm Monday.

[Archdiocese of Milwaukee Catholic Cemeteries]Lists last address at 4850 N Wildwood Ave. But as long as I (Phillip Forrestal) can remember that was a field and now a parking lot. Since Mary Jane last address was 4850 N Woodruff. Ave I believe the Wildwood address was a mistake.
